& Investments
Savings and investment planning is about putting your money somewhere it works harder than it does sitting in a current account, while keeping enough within reach for whatever you need it for. At Vintage Wealth Management, that means looking at your whole financial position and building a plan across the accounts and products that suit your goals, your tax position, and how soon you'll need the money. It's for anyone with cash building up beyond their day-to-day needs, a lump sum to put to work, or investments they want managed properly rather than left to drift.
More people are paying tax on their savings and investments than at any point in the last decade, because the allowances that used to shelter them have been cut hard. The capital gains tax exemption has fallen from £12,300 in 2022/23 to just £3,000 today, and the dividend allowance has dropped from £2,000 to £500 over the same period. The personal savings allowance hasn't changed since 2016, but with interest rates far higher than they were then, far more savers are breaching it and paying tax on interest they never used to. Money that felt tax-free a few years ago often isn't anymore.
At the same time, holding too much in cash works against you. UK households hold more than £1.9 trillion in cash savings and deposits, and a lot of it sits in accounts paying well under inflation, which means the spending power of that money falls a little every year even while the balance stays the same. Getting the balance right between what you keep in cash, what you invest, and how you shelter it from tax is where the difference shows up over time. We work through that balance with you and build a plan you can act on.
Our savings and investment services
We cover the full range of savings and investment work, with a dedicated page for each area so you can go straight to what fits you.
The simplest place to start sheltering money from tax is your annual allowance. Our ISA guidance covers the different types available, how to use the allowance across them, and how ISAs fit alongside your pension and other tax wrappers. With the tax-free allowances on savings and investments outside a wrapper cut sharply in recent years, this is where a lot of people start.
Once you've used your ISA and pension allowances, investment bonds offer another tax-efficient home for a lump sum, with no contribution limit and the ability to defer tax on withdrawals. They're often used for larger sums and for passing wealth on through trusts. We assess whether a bond suits your tax position before recommending one.
For money you want invested across a spread of assets rather than held as cash, unit trusts and OEICs pool your money with other investors and put it in the hands of professional fund managers. They give you diversification without having to pick individual shares yourself, and they suit most people building a long-term portfolio. We help you choose funds that match your goals and your appetite for risk.
If you're holding a large amount in cash, whether from selling a business, an inheritance, or savings built over time, our cash management service helps you earn a better rate and keep more of it protected by spreading it across banks through a single platform. It's a straightforward way to stop idle cash sitting there losing value while you're not watching it. We set this up as part of your wider plan.
For larger portfolios that need active, hands-on management, discretionary fund management hands the day-to-day investment decisions to a professional manager who runs your portfolio to an agreed brief. It suits investors who'd rather delegate the buying and selling than sign off every move themselves. We'll tell you whether the size and shape of your portfolio makes it worthwhile.
